Hey, I finally finished Fool's Fate! So now I'm competent to critique! I think!
These three illustrations for Liveship Traders are actually my favourites from your Robin Hobb series. This one, I love for the colours and great composition - the way She Who Remembers looks at us out of that one eye through the prison bars is very cool. I also love the rocks - they remind me of some rock formations here in NZ, round Raglan. I am very jealous of your Photoshop painting skills! I've just started putting in a bit more work with my tablet myself (illustrating - guess what - Robin Hobb!) - I'm not anywhere near being able to do something like that.
A couple of *very* minor quibbles (just because a critique has to have them): I think on the sides of the cave, you would need to indent the rocks a bit more - the shading suggests very deep grooves, but the line on the sides - particularly the bend on the right side - doesn't seem to follow that through.
I was also wondering about the white highlights on the rocks in front of the cave. Are they reflections of the rocks above on wet stone, or little waves lapping out of the cave? I decided that it must be the later, I reckon if it was reflections you would probably have to have some blue from the sky reflected as well. But that might destroy the very nice colour balance of the image... so don't mind me. I'm not a fan of to the letter realism anyway, as you probably know!
I really like the angle of this picture, as though Wintrow is the one imprisoned. (It's been a long time since I read this trilogy-- I don't remember the particulars.) It's very dreamlike, almost surreal.
Argh. My boyfriend (yes, now I'm not only in love - we are actually together! *swoon*) has the books, so now I have to read them at some point. As soon as he manages to move them from his parent's place to his own. I tried not to read the spoiler - but I had to look at the picture of course, so if the picture itself is a spoiler too, I hope it didn't spoil too much.
What I like most about this is that you don't really know if it's the person or the dragon that's emprisoned. I like the very smooth skin texture of the dragon and the pose of the girl gives the whole scene something desperate beyond facial expressions or words. So yeah: I like it!
Awwww. That's great. I love her. She loves more comfortable here than in previous incarnations of yours.Which pleases me because I hate her being so confined.
Oh, she looks soooo cute and beautiful! And really knowing. The golden eye is very expressive. The rocks are of great colors and I love it that they're visibly wet.
I know it's partly the perspective but Wintrow's left arm looks a bit too log to me, and the feet are too small. What do you think?
